In 2024, consumption of plastic tableware and kitchenware decreased by -7.1% to 3.3M tons, falling for the fifth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the consumption volume increased by 6.9%. Over the period under review, consumption hit record highs at 4.3M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2024, consumption failed to regain momentum.
The size of the plastic tableware and kitchenware market in Asia-Pacific dropped to $14B in 2024, with a decrease of -7.2% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $17.1B. From 2020 to 2024, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2024 were China (1.5M tons), India (758K tons) and Pakistan (243K tons), together comprising 76% of total consumption.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +1.6%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.
In value terms, China ($7.2B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($2.6B). It was followed by Indonesia.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +2.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+2.4% per year) and Indonesia (-1.2% per year).
The countries with the highest levels of plastic tableware and kitchenware per capita consumption in 2024 were South Korea (1,508 kg per 1000 persons), Thailand (1,295 kg per 1000 persons) and China (1,046 kg per 1000 persons).
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +0.6%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced a decline in the per capita consumption figures.

The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2013 to 2024; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 14%. The volume of production peaked at 5.7M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2024, production remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware production reached $26B in 2024 estimated in export price. The total production indicated tangible growth from 2013 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, production decreased by -1.7% against 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $26.5B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, production failed to regain momentum.
China (3.7M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of plastic tableware and kitchenware production, comprising approx. 68% of total volume. Moreover, plastic tableware and kitchenware production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (789K tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Pakistan (243K tons), with a 4.4% share.
In China, plastic tableware and kitchenware production increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+1.4% per year) and Pakistan (+0.4% per year).
In 2024, purchases abroad of plastic tableware and kitchenware decreased by -2.7% to 282K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 330K tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports dropped to $1.4B in 2024. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2013 to 2024; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $1.7B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
In 2024, Japan (47K tons), South Korea (33K tons), Singapore (30K tons), the Philippines (29K tons), Hong Kong SAR (29K tons), Malaysia (21K tons), Indonesia (15K tons), India (9.9K tons) and Cambodia (8.3K tons) represented the major importer of plastic tableware and kitchenware in Asia-Pacific, making up 78% of total import. New Zealand (6.6K tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($307M), South Korea ($169M) and Singapore ($109M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2024, together comprising 41% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Cambodia and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Cambodia, with a CAGR of +26.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $5,089 per ton in 2024, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the last eleven years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2024 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($6,588 per ton), while the Philippines ($1,343 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
For the fourth year in a row, Asia-Pacific recorded growth in overseas shipments of plastic tableware and kitchenware, which increased by 12% to 2.5M tons in 2024. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2013 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, exports increased by +106.7% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports reached $10.4B in 2024. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $11.6B in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China dominates exports structure, reaching 2.2M tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2024. Taiwan (Chinese) (76K tons), Vietnam (50K tons), Malaysia (43K tons) and India (41K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2013 to 2024, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic tableware and kitchenware exports from China stood at +9.5%. At the same time, Vietnam (+14.3%), Malaysia (+5.7%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2013-2024. India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. China (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Taiwan (Chinese) and India saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -2.3% from 2013 to 2024, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($9.3B) remains the largest plastic tableware and kitchenware supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($316M), with a 3% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 1.9% share.
From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +11.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.2% per year) and Vietnam (+11.8% per year).
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $4,152 per ton in 2024, declining by -10.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $5,327 per ton in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($4,148 per ton), while Malaysia ($2,683 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
